Jordan: Za'atari Refugee Camp
In Za’atari refugee camp, our Lab began with The Refugee Archive’s first oral history, collected to pilot our method and learn what it takes to document women’s lives with care and consistency in a camp setting. Za’atari remains one of the largest Syrian refugee camps in Jordan, home to tens of thousands of people (around 65,000 in mid-2025), and it continues to generate a deep record of displacement, family separation, and survival that is too often flattened into statistics.
